One of the most exciting new developments here at Scottish Window Solutions, has been welcoming our first female apprentice.
Like most construction companies, we’ve had an “all-boys” team of craftsmen until now. Not by choice or preference, it’s just how things tends to be in the industry. But all that’s changed for us now…
Back in March, we were desperately short of staff in the post lockdown building boom. It was impossible to find people, so we turned to CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) for help.
To be honest, we weren’t really thinking about taking on more apprentices, we thought we needed experienced staff. But CITB play such an important role in helping us find/train/fund new starts, that we knew it was worth a chat.
We’re so glad we did. They brought us Eliza, our first female apprentice joiner. And what a find she has been.
Originally from Hungary, Eliza had a career in Hotel and Tourism until both her kids hit school age. She’s now been with us for 6 months, and here’s what she had to say:
“I was 33, both my kids were at school, and I knew it was my time. I had to make the change. I knew I wanted to move into the construction industry. And I knew I wanted to do carpentry. Ever since I was a kid, helping my dad, I had loved it.
“People ask me if it’s hard, and can a woman really do this. And I say - yes, it’s hard. But a woman can definitely do it. Of course, sometimes a man’s strength is needed to lift or do certain things. But all the guys are great. They treat me as an equal, just offering help when I need it”.
“I love doing the high-end precision work with steel and brass. I’ve been working on the Johnny Walker Project in Edinburgh which has been a fantastic experience. Scottish Window Solutions are a great company to work for. And I’m so grateful for this opportunity.”
“Yes, it’s hard juggling motherhood, travelling, college and work. But when I do something, I do it with all my heart. Life is always a challenge, and this is too. But as Linda says - there is always a way.
“I am so glad I made the move to the construction industry. I hope more women do the same. And I hope more employers give them the opportunity that Linda and David gave me”.
Not much more that we can say. We’re delighted to have Eliza on board. Her passion and commitment were clear from the outset. And that’s exactly what we want to see in our team, not whether they’re a man or a woman. That doesn’t matter. But how you feel about your work really matters.
Looking forward to lot more girls like her 😊
