It can be said that a Bothy is often only as good as it’s location and by that measure The Lookout Bothy at Rhuba Hunish is The Ritz of Bothies! At the northernmost tip of The Isle of Skye, overlooking the sea towards the Outer Hebrides, it’s possibly the most spectacular, albiet logistically challenging, installations we’ve ever undertaken.
The remote location of Rubha Hunish proved to be a formidable hurdle on this installation, with steel frames, glass, tools and a generator to haul. Fortunately
@scottishmountainrescue were able to help with a quad bike and trailer, making several runs with the precious cargo.
After several days of commuting by foot or bike with yet more cargo, the windows were in, framing a jaw-dropping panoramic view and making The Lookout Bothy the envy of all bothies.
Located on a jagged peninsula overlooking the choppy waters of The Minch, The Lookout Bothy was built in the early 20th century, originally used as a watch station for the coastguard.
Since closing in the 1970s and falling into disrepair, it’s since been restored and offers shelter from the elements for whale watchers and bothy aficionados alike.
